CoRE Network

The CoRE Network has been in existence since 2004 and is an essential part of the development of Community Renewable Energy (CoRE). The Network is a forum we have set up for community groups and others interested in renewables to share and discuss issues.

The CoRE Network's mission is to promote opportunities for community groups to develop renewable energy systems and to provide them with the knowledge, contacts and a vehicle to enable this to happen.

The CoRE Network is free to join, to become a member see below.

About the CoRE Network

The Network helps to identify possible partners that CoRE can develop community based renewable energy systems with.

The CoRE Network is open to all. It delivers various renewable energy training courses and has a Twitter page with updates on renewables funding, events and topics.

It holds quarterly meetings, attracting up to 40 people who come to:

  • Share information and expertise.
  • Identify shared problems and tackle them – e.g. CE Electric, the local electricity supply company, has attended a meeting to discuss grid connection issues.
  • Provide a voice to make representations to Government, Agencies, Policy Bodies and others (e.g. the Regional Assembly or One NE).
  • Bring interested individuals together to form their own companies, Berwick CoRE being an example of this.

The History of The CoRE Network

In 2003 / 2004 several groups had identified money, time, and expertise as the barriers to community renewable energy and concluded that communities needed help to obtain the benefits of renewables. The idea of an organisation to support community renewables was taking shape.

By the end of 2004 the European Equal Programme, Inspire Project, had brought together some of these groups and was promoting the idea of an enabling Social Enterprise to support community renewables. The Network was born.

By winter 2005 The Network had produced a CoRE Business Plan and submitted an ambitious £20 million bid for funds to the Living Landmarks Lottery Fund.

Autumn 2006, an enabling Social Enterprise, CoRE was established. A part-time manager was appointed to CoRE and the Business Plan was refined, reworked and cross referenced; against national policy, regional strategy and social, environmental and economic benefits.

In July 2007, after discussion with One North East, CoRE was given the status of a ‘regionally based national pilot project’ and base line funding of £380,000 spread over three years. The CoRE Network, with its wide membership and their rich pool of ideas, is essential to the development of CoRE.

The Network is freely accessible to all, membership is open to everyone. Please see joining details above.
