Energy and Climate Change Minister
visits BioCoRE project in Alnwick

Energy and Climate Change Minister, Joan Ruddock, visited CoRE in Alnwick at one of its energy projects. Joan Ruddock said: “I was impressed by the enthusiasm of everyone involved in the CoRE research project in Alnwick. We need local, on-the-ground solutions to engage communities in the challenge of climate change; the work of CoRE is helping to make this a reality.” The project, based in one of the St Thomas’ Workshops in Alnwick, is exploring ways of generating energy from everyday waste and is ground breaking in several ways:

  • CoRE is working in partnership with an NHS Pathfinder Project, Lionhearts, which works with adults with mental health problems.
  • CoRE is researching the viability of untreated recycled vegetable oil for energy generation.
  • The project is being monitored and verified by students from Newcastle University’s Swann Institute – who are using the findings for their Dissertations.

Lionhearts Project Manager, Trevor Cooke said, ‘Without a doubt this project is really helping our clients. The pride from the interest shown by so many external bodies in our work is great for self-esteem.’

Joan Ruddock said, “CoRE has already had significant success in a number of renewable energy schemes across the North East, which is why DECC and NESTA recently awarded the organisation a £20,000 grant under the Big Green Challenge Plus.
