Community Renewable Energy (CoRE) has been working in partnership with Glendale Gateway Trust on the feasibility of a community owned wind turbine in Glendale. This renewable energy project is being developed on a similar model to the community wind turbine project at ‘The Steps of Grace’ near Berwick upon Tweed, hosted by Berwick Community Trust. A detailed appraisal of national wind data has shown that there is a significantly higher average wind speed in the area to the immediate east of Wooler. Therefore a planning application for a meteorological mast was recently submitted to Northumberland County Council planning department and approved on 2 June 2010. The mast will be erected during the summer 2010 and it will collect wind data over a period of 18 months. This is essential in order to assess the feasibility of a turbine and will include wind speed, direction and reliability at the site. Work will begin in September on developing a better understanding of the site and any possible environmental impact the project may have. A range of studies, including archaeology, geology and hydrology of the site, a specialist study of the possible impact on resident and migrating wildlife will also be required. Public consultation activities will begin this autumn and will be led by Glendale Gateway Trust. Further information on consultation events and opportunities will be advertised in the local press. Information on the project is available at www.wooler.org.uk, just click on the Green Glendale button on the front page. Or call Neil Wilson of the Glendale Gareway Tust on 01668 282412. As the project progresses all involved are optimistic of a very positive outcome.
